Roozbeh Gharib is an innovative composer and performer, blending Persian Classical music with contemporary digital techniques and jazz. His work pushes musical boundaries by merging ancient sounds with modern technologies. Roozbeh’s musical journey began at the early age of 7, playing keyboards while learning basic music theory and sound synthesis. His passion for music expanded during his years in Tehran's underground music scene in the early 2000s, where he played electric bass in experimental bands and explored jazz, blues, electronic and classical music. Relocating to Canada, he earned his BFA in Integrative Music Studies from Concordia University under the mentorship of composer Rosemary Mountain. His studies deepened his understanding of experimental music, jazz, and ethnomusicology, while keeping his Persian roots at the forefront. Roozbeh later completed his MA in Music Composition with supervision of Michael Coghlan at York University, focusing on sound design, interactive music, and developing generative music apps. His thesis, Interactive Music for Public Spaces (2015), showcased his ability to combine interactive methods with modern electronic music. Throughout his career, Roozbeh has studied under renowned mentors such as Indian percussion master Trichy Sankaran, the former lead trombonist of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and a prominent figure in jazz studies,Ron Westray, a prolific jazz saxophonist and composer, Sundar Viswanathan, a leading ethnomusicologist with expertise in world music, Jay Rahn, an award-winning jazz composer and educator,Al Henderson, a distinguished music theorist and scholar of early music, Mark Chambers, a composer and performer specializing in contemporary music,Michael Pinssoneault, and Persian Setar player Mehrdad Torabi, enriching his compositions with both Persian and global influences. In addition to composing and performing, Roozbeh has translated important music texts, such as Piano Playingby Josef Hofmann, The Jazz Piano Bookby Mark Levine, Piano Mastery by Harriette Brower making Western music theory accessible to Persian-speaking audiences. As the founder of Nix Interactive Studios, Roozbeh envisions it as a platform where Persian music, jazz, and electronic soundscapes merge, providing artists with opportunities to explore innovative musical expressions. His solo albums, including Solo Piano IV: Nocturnals (Revisited), 8 Daydreamsand Solo Piano: Persian Tunes, have reached over 150,000 listeners globally, resonating with audiences across cultural boundaries.
